Our Story

A choir shaped by friendship, faith, and a love of Renaissance polyphony.

Origins

Cantores Sanctis Diebus (CSD) began in December 1977 when six singers, already part of St Martin's Church choir, met to sing Byrd's three part Mass. The experience felt so good that they repeated it at Easter. Soon after, Nick Hale was invited to direct the group, and he has led it with care and energy ever since.

Name and Early Years

The name is Latin for "singers for the holy day" or "holiday" and reflects the group spirit of celebration and friendship. As members headed to university, the choir started sharing music beyond St Martin's and across Wiltshire. Thanks to Nick Hale's connections in Javea (Xabia), the choir began singing in Spain twice a year. That tradition continues today.

Our Music and Community

CSD focuses on Tudor and Spanish Renaissance unaccompanied polyphony. Over the years, hundreds of singers of all ages have joined, each bringing their own energy. No two concerts feel the same, but every one is rewarding, challenging, and joyful. With limited rehearsal time, members are confident sight readers. The real magic comes from a shared commitment to music and friendship.
